I DO NOT PLAGERIZE!

I was recently sent an email stating that a piece I had written for the 2014 Blog for Mental Health was not an original piece by you, but rather a reprint of an article by another author altogether; and that my article was removed from the blogroll; and was I aware that reproducing an entire article was plagiarizing/content theft?! Umm, yes I am aware of that and No, I did not reproduce any other authors work and present it as my own! The article I wrote (“Don’t Panic! Don’t Panic”) is most certainly my own work based on my experience and knowledge of suffering from anxiety; and MY blog was posted on MY blog page well before I submitted it to the Blogroll for the 2014 Blogging for Mental Health campaign. I am extremely angry and hurt that someone has not only stolen my work but then presented me to be the plagiarizer! It seems that one cannot even post a  blog without risking copyright issues. Just another lesson learnt about copyrighting and the integrity of others.

I have sent you an email expressing my apologies and explaining a bit further, but the bottom line is I did not handle the situation in the best way. As I stated in the email, I’ll do all that I can to find out who has plagiarized your work, or if it was instead some kind of confusion. I sincerely hope you don’t hold this against the BFMH project, the blame lies entirely with me for the way I initially approached things with you. Also, in case you are concerned, I never spoke of the situation to anyone. I may have been careless, but for what it’s worth, I was only careless in speaking to you.

Please forgive me. In the years I have been blogging I have in fact encountered a great many cases of people reproducing pieces on their blogs simply because they don’t understand that it’s content theft. I thought you had made an honest mistake like that; in reality the mistake was all mine. I hope that you know now that my mistake was not intended to be malicious or hurtful, though of course I understand completely why you are upset, and I am absolutely heartsick over being the cause of that.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if there is anything more I can do to mitigate the damage I have done you. As I said, I will certainly give you all the help I can in finding out how/if you have been plagiarized. Meantime, you have taught me a valuable lesson. I’m sorry that it had to come at the price of upsetting you in this way.

Hi Ruby; I have replied to your email and I apologize for any distress I may have caused you; It certainly is/was not my intent to place any negativity onto the BFMH project in any way; and hope that this post was not taken in such a way. In hindsight perhaps I should not have mentioned the BFMH project however hope readers realize that there was no ill-feelings towards your blog or the project; simply the situation of plagiarism. I am very upset at the accusation that my pledge piece was not my own work but completely understand that you are not accusing me of plagiarizing; simply bringing to my attention that this piece is being presented as being another’s work and not my own. No damage has been done by you Ruby; in fact you have done me a favour in teaching me a great lesson on the risks of content theft and how careful one should be when publishing their own work; even in a blog setting. =)
